Ideally you'll need a high-powered blender like The Vitamix Blender to make a proper smoothie. Using this modern technology will fully brake down the cellular structure of your food ready for speedy absorption by your body. Depending on the power of your blender, you may have to add small amounts at a time for easier blending.
Victoria Boutenko, author of the top-selling book, Green for Life is a lady whom I admire for the extensive research work that she has done on greens, and in her book, she says that we should just keep it simple. Green Smoothies should be made with just water, green leaves and fruit, without any added superfoods, fats or proteins. This way they are easily digested and utilised by the body, in this simple form they are cleansing as well as nourishing.

Then there are people I know that prefer to make fruit smoothies with added supplements or superfoods. So for instance you could make a smoothie with mixed berries, freshly made green juice and various supplements including; Newgreens Superfood Blend, Whey Protein Powder, Goji Berries, Maca, Mesquite Meal, Cacao Powder, Bee Pollen, Organic Coconut Oil, Spirulina and Wheat or barley grass powder to name but a few. These superfoods can be added to smoothies as the sweet taste of the fruits hide any unusual flavours. You can also add things like Almonds, or ground Flax seeds, Hemp seeds and Sunflower seeds etc for your omega's (The essential good fats).
David Wolfe, author of the top-selling book Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future
is a guy whom I admire greatly for his vast knowledge of the subject. He is clearly a huge fan of using superfoods in all type of recipes and the reason for this is because of their high nutrient value. For more information on superfoods, check out the Superfoods information page.
To conclude, there isn't any right or wrong way to make a smoothie, but as your body cleanses and gets used to the idea, just listen to what it tells you because it really can let you know what is right for you. Step 1: The Milk
- Soak a 1/2 cup of raw organic almonds overnight, in the morning rinse and throw them into the blender with 2 dates and 2 cups of pure/filtered water
- Blend on high speed until the almonds and dates have been completely broken down and the water has turned into a white frothy milk.
Step 2: The Power House Smoothie
Add the following ingredients to the Almond Milk*
- 1 1/2 cups of mixed organic berries
- 1 banana
- 1 tablespoon of Wheat Grass or Spirulina (optional)
- 1 tablespoon of Raw Honey for extra sweetness (only if needed)
- 2 tablespoon of Goji Berries pre-soaked for 20 minuets (include soak water)
- 1 tablespoon of Raw Cacao Powder or Cacao Nibs
- 1 tablespoon of Maca Powder
- 1 tablespoon of Healthy Protein
- 1 avocado flesh & pit, or 2 tablespoons of organic flax seed oil & or (pre-ground) flax seeds
- 2 sticks of celery
- Juice of a lime, in fact I cut it into segments & just throw in the whole lime.
Blend, drink and enjoy the power of Superfoods!
*Instead of almond milk, you could use Coconut water or freshly made green juice.
You probably wont manage it all in one go, but with the added limejuice it will save ok in the fridge. If you don't feel well nourished and energized after drinking this smoothie, I think you should consider doing a Whole Body Cleanse that would allow for better absorption & assimilation.
When blending, because of the high absorption of nutrients it is important to use only organic produce whenever possible, otherwise you may also be getting high absorption of toxic chemicals. Leaves and berries are some of the most chemically sprayed produce.
